After I got everything unpacked I decided to go exploring. The previous day I happened upon Cementerio de la Recoleta so I decided to go on a field trip to see what it was all about. The place is mesmerizing, it should be on every list of Top 100 things to see in the world. The cemetery itself dates back to 1822, takes up an entire city block, and contains nearly 5000 above ground vaults and many of Argentina's most notable people, including Eva Peron, are buried within. Words cannot describe it so I have included some of the pictures. If anyone would like to see more just post a comment at the end of the blog and I'll make sure to send some.
I must visit the Cemetery again. One could easily explore it for an entire day and it would still seem surreal. I am really hoping to do a few sketches of some sculptures I liked. For more info on the cemetery here is a link to a blog devoted specifically to the architecture, history, and current events regarding the cemetery.
I was also informed by a wonderful friend of a Theater in Buenos Aires that had been converted into a bookstore. Intrigued I looked into it and found that the bookstore was located only a few blocks from my apartment.
Here are a few pics from my visit. Enjoy.
Those are the most exciting parts of my day. The rest of the time I spent learning to shop in the local supermarkets, searching for the ever elusive towel that I will need now that I am living solo, and cooking myself a nice meal of rice, lentils, white beans, onions, tomatoes, and cheap Chimi Churri (the marinade used for the famous Argentine Parilla (grilling)). It goes great in rice and beans too!
That's all for now folks, tomorrow is a bright new day with a full city to explore. Thanks for keeping up with my travels and if anyone has any questions or feedback I would love to hear it!
